Formed in Mie Prefecture in 2010, Japan’s own beatdown death metal force HOSTILE EYES return with their long-awaited second album — their first full-length in ten years since “Disobedience.” The fusion of brutal death metal and beatdown hardcore that has defined the band from the beginning remains intact, but this record expands the range considerably, bringing in elements of old-school deathcore and nu metal. The vocals were already known for highly skilled gutturals, but here they make another major leap forward from the first album, displaying overwhelming expressive range. Guitar and bass move far more actively than before, filling the record with memorable riffs that remain catchy without sacrificing detail. The drums also feel more organic than the programmed character of the previous record, pushing the music forward with a more direct sound and a wider vocabulary of patterns.
