Belmadigula are one of the sharpest new forces in Japanese heavy music. Although roughly half of the members come from the hardcore scene, the band’s music refuses to remain inside hardcore, absorbing everything around it. Depending on the song, black metal, sludgecore and even junk rock can surface. Their live presentation is built around overwhelming volume, with costumes and lighting used to create a world whose scale suggests enormous potential for where the band can go next. This recording was made entirely DIY by the members. The sound is rough, but the balance is clearly calculated in detail. That allows the live experience and the recorded experience to complement one another: aspects that can only be felt in the room are balanced by details that only reveal themselves on the record. Anyone who has experienced Belmadigula only live should absolutely spend time with the recording as well.
